Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychotherapy?
In general, psychotherapy involves the therapist helping you (or your child) to get to know yourself better and increase your self-awareness in an effort to change your life in a healthy, positive way. The experience of therapy is different for everyone since each therapist and each person is unique.
Who do you work with?
I work with infants, children, adolescents, and adults. My areas of specialization include perinatal & maternal mental health, early childhood mental health, trauma, and parenting support. Please see my About page for more information about other areas I treat.
What are parenting support sessions?
Parenting support sessions are often referred to as ‘collateral’ work. This is a time for parents/caregivers to meet with me without having their child present. These sessions are unique in that they are not individual therapy for parents/caregivers, nor couples therapy. Rather, the purpose is to get answers to your pressing parenting questions, explore your concerns about your child’s development, and to learn the tools needed to support your child’s most optimal functioning.
What does the word “perinatal” mean?
“Perinatal” refers to the period of time during pregnancy and, generally speaking, around a year or so after giving birth.
‘peri’ = about or around
‘natal’ = birth
Some other common terms you may have heard surrounding pregnancy & birth are:
‘antenatal’ / ‘prenatal’ = before birth
‘postnatal’ / ‘postpartum’ = after birth
It’s important to keep in mind that there’s no right or wrong term used to describe the time during pregnancy and/or after giving birth, and to be aware that care providers (i.e., doctors, nurses, midwives, etc) may use these terms interchangeably.
How long are therapy sessions?
Sessions are typically 50-minutes long (45-minutes for younger children).
Do you have evening and weekend appointments available?
Evening appointments are available.
How much do sessions cost?
My hourly fee is $250.
Are sessions covered by my insurance?
I am not contracted with any insurance companies; however I can provide you with a superbill which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement using out of network benefits. Please check the specifics of your coverage and verify that you can see a provider who is out of network.
What happens during the first therapy session?
During the first session we will review intake paperwork together and start building our therapeutic relationship with one another. I will ask you some follow-up questions about the information you provided on your intake forms and you will have the opportunity to ask me any questions you may have.
If you are seeking therapy for your child, the first session is a time for parents to meet with me without the child present. This session will give us the opportunity to get to know one another and for me to obtain an understanding of your concerns and therapeutic goals for your child.
How long will I need to come to therapy?
Together we will determine your needs regarding frequency and duration of treatment.
When will I start feeling better?
I wish I had a crystal ball (that would be pretty awesome, right?!) but unfortunately I don’t. Some clients begin to feel better soon after starting therapy while for others it may take several weeks or months to feel improvement. Everyone’s needs, circumstances, and therapeutic goals are different, and that is okay! Together we will openly discuss how therapy is working for you on a regular basis in order to evaluate your progress and make changes as needed.
